REHEARSAL LEADER, MUSICAL DIRECTOR AND BAND COACH

Every band can sound great!

Sometimes they just have to be waken up a little. I love constantly working on ways of achieving this.

It’s all about making music from the starting point of truly listening, from your own experience. Sharpening your attention so that the potential in the players manifests itself, and the musical collaboration in a band or orchestra emerges. It’s often an ‘Eureka moment’: ‘Oh, it can sound like that!’ and ‘It’s as simple as that!’.

And that’s the way it is. The music plays itself. But to reach this point calls for alertness and an open ear. I take great satisfaction from contributing to this, for just a single rehearsal or in a gradual development over many years.

Onno truly understands the art of the bandleader. He tackles every rehearsal with his full attention and energy, and as a result we’ve made enormous musical progress over the ten years we’ve been working with him. Time and time again he puts all his knowledge to full use, with real passion, and what’s more he can work on group dynamics in a quick and enjoyable way. So the music always takes centre stage.
KIEK BOSCH

By placing the emphasis on focus and concentration, details and playing by ear, with genuine involvement, he has melded the band into a unified whole, while never losing our own unique sound. And by holding separate rehearsals with the different sections of our band he has brought them to a higher level. In short: the ideal rehearsal leader for a band that has always been a collection of fairly headstrong, anarchic individualists.

de Fanfare van de Eerste Liefdesnacht

fanfare van de eerste liefdesnacht

‘De Fanfare van de Eerste Liefdesnacht Opens Your Heart’ is the title of a book about this colourful Amsterdam street orchestra. And that’s what they do! Specialised in ‘world music’, the Liefdesnacht have been creating a party wherever they go for over 30 years. Welcome guests at theatre events, parties and all manner of celebrations. Subtly but intensely making their presence felt at festivals and demonstrations: from Brittany to Romania and from Poland to Cuba.

I have been the Liefdesnacht’s musical director for some ten years.

The Tegenwind street orchestra

Tegenwind in Istanbul. Film: Hermine Schneider

Tegenwind makes heart-warming music with infectious rhythms. A twenty-piece orchestra playing adventurous music. On the streets, in the bar, at a party… most often heard in Utrecht and district, but also in the rest of the Netherlands and sometimes (far) beyond.

I lead the Tegenwind’s rehearsals once a month. The other rehearsals are led by Hermine Schneider.

Bandcoach

The role of a band coach is a deeply rewarding one, and it’s one I’m happy to play. As the ‘new ears’ of a band, I can take a fresh perspective. That throws a whole new light on the interaction in the band. I then get straight down to work to freshen up and dust down the band dynamics, so they play with renewed focus.
